While
the young Syd Wyatt was garnering success with his Appaloosa Blaze,
not far away at
Black Diamond, Alberta, the New Brunswick-born Donna Robinson was
enjoying her first Appaloosa, Buster’s
Black Beauty ApHCC #424. With a mutual appreciation of the
Appaloosa horse and the ranching lifestyle, Syd and Donna were
soon a couple, marrying in 1959. Donna Wyatt, despite a growing
family, not only served as Secretary to the South Regional
Appaloosa Club (SRAC) but helped to start and run the first
Appaloosa Youth Club in
Canada
, and worked on the ApHCC Youth Committee. She was instrumental in
developing the National Appaloosa Queen Contest in
Canada
, and was active in administering the program for over a decade,
including creating the series of unique hand-beaded hat crowns
presented to the winning competitor.
After
the demise of SRAC, Donna became involved with the Calgary
Regional Appaloosa Club (CRAC). She is a past President and a
director of the
Calgary
club, and she and Syd host the popular annual cattle round up at
The Gap, inviting CRAC members to participate.
Donna continues to work tirelessly to promote Appaloosas
and the ApHCC at all levels, supporting local parades, and
fronting promotional booths at the Calgary Exhibition and
Stampede, the Spruce Meadows Equi Fair and the annual Horse Owners
and Breeders Conference at
Red Deer
,
AB.
Her involvement as a volunteer has been recognized by the High
River Agricultural Society, Canadian Girls’ Rodeo Association,
The Calgary Exhibition and Stampede, and Spruce Meadows. Often
accompanied by Syd, she has made her mark as an international
ambassador for Canadian Appaloosa horses, promoting them from
Equitana in
Germany
and
Australia
, to
California
’s Equine Affair and the World Equestrian Games in
Spain
. Donna continues to enjoy life to the full as a grandmother,
watching the fourth generation of Wyatts competing with their
beloved Appaloosas.
